The Pride of the Ilocano Culture

As a Filipino, it is part of our culture and tradition to celebrate feasts and festivals. We have so many different festivals all over the country, in and region where different things have been seen and experienced. In the Philippines, most festivals are of religious origin, but today the religious aspect is typically secondary to the general spirit of celebration. Filipino hospitality is legendary, and it is not more apparent at any time than at the festival time.

A festival was conceived by the provincial government of Ilocos Sur that will highlight cultures and traditions and also attract local and international tourists. They call it the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival. The Kannawidan festival is an occasion to recognize Ilocos Sur’s sons and daughters who brought honor to the province, celebrate the abundant harvest, or just to celebrate the Ilocano spirit that continues to drive locals to boost the province. This festival is also a time to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur as a province since it was separated on February 3, 1818. Various festivities were staged from trade, agriculture, aqua, and livestock while a display of farm products opened the 17-day festival. The tradition was also found in the culinary treats that residents prepared including delicacies that Ilocos Sur is known for. Different Municipalities displayed products under the One-Town-One-Product (OTOP) booth inside the trade fair.

This year, the Kannawidan Festival may not be the same as it used to be, due to the underlying covid-19 pandemic. Let's all be happy for the fact that it was still being kept and not canceled. As long as we Ilocanos were happy and pleased with it, the festival was a success. For now, let's adapt to the new normal and hope for things to come back just as before and better.
